Chere et bonne Madame V - beste Freundinn, je ne vous ecris aujourd'hui que deux mots a la hate - je pars dans une heure pour une excursion de chasse qui durera une quinzaine de jours - je vous ecrirai une grande lettre a mon retour - mais je ne veux pas attendre jusque-la pour vous dire un bonjour amical et vous serrer la main. - Les journaux anglais parlent de vous - tous s'accordent a dire que votre voix est plus belle que jamais - "and that you look very well" 1 , cela me rend fort heureux - et je vous prie de continuer comme vous avez commence. - Tous ces concerts doivent vous fatiguer et vous ennuyer un brin. Saltykoff, St. -Petersburg, 1870 This is a book which in spite of its eccentricity, an eccentricity even running somewhat into caricature, will not only be read with pleasure by lovers of humour and of satirical verve, but will doubtless be taken into consideration by the future historian of the changes through which the face of Russian society has passed during the last hundred years. Its author, who usually writes under the name of Stchedrine, but whose real name is Saltykoff (a descendant, by the way, of the ancient family of Moscow Boyars of that name), after having, like many other writers suspected of propagating liberal opinions, undergone his time of persecution and of exile under the Emperor Nicholas, acquired a great deal of popularity by the publication, some fifteen years ago, of a series of sketches called Scenes of Provincial Life (Gubernskie Ocherki) , in which he lashed with indomitable vigour the numerous abuses then...

Стр. 110, строка 35: «стыдно» вместо «стыдно» (по наборной рукописи). Стр. 111, строки 28–29: «у вас чудесные яблоки!» вместо «у вас чудные яблоки» (по наборной рукописи). Замысел повести относится к началу декабря 1881 г. Об этом свидетельствуют следующие строки письма Тургенева к Ж. А. Полонской от 20 декабря 1881 г. (1 января 1882 г.): «Презамечательный психологический факт — сообщенная Вами посмертная влюбленность Аленицына! Из этого можно бы сделать полуфантастический рассказ вроде Эдгара По». Однако к созданию произведения (не рассказа, а повести) Тургенев приступил значительно позднее, о чем известно из его письма к М. М. Стасюлевичу от 14 (26) августа 1882 г. Писатель сообщал: «…несколько дней тому назад я принялся за повесть <…>, да с тех пор так ретиво пишу, что настрочил уже половину (а во всей повести будет листа три печатных) и если так продолжится, то к Вашему приезду сюда (в конце будущей недели?) вся штука будет готова — и, если окажется годной, можно будет пустить ...

Ralston Third edition, greatly enlarged The words «third edition» are particularly agreeable to the ears of a Russian, in connection with this issue of Mr. Ralston’s excellent translation of Krilof’s fables, as they prove that English readers are beginning to feel an interest in the literature of his country, and in the national life and character which they have hitherto only contemplated from a political point о view. And Krilof certainly deserves all the attention thus bestowed upon him. He is the only original fabulist who has appeared since La Fontaine; and though he does not, perhaps, equal the exquisite grace of the inimitable Frenchman, though he has fewer sly strokes of wit, less cunning simplicity in telling a story, he has, on the other hand, more originality of invention. His observant good sense penetrates to the roots of things, and he possesses a genuine kind of phlegmatic humour which betrays the Oriental element in Slavonic nature. In his birth and all the circumstances of his life Krilof was as Russian as possible: he was essentially national in his ways of thinking, feeling, and writing; and it may be maintained without exaggeration that a foreigner who has carefully studied Krilof’s fables will have a better idea...
