Часть текста: the ancient family of Moscow Boyars of that name), after having, like many other writers suspected of propagating liberal opinions, undergone his time of persecution and of exile under the Emperor Nicholas, acquired a great deal of popularity by the publication, some fifteen years ago, of a series of sketches called Scenes of Provincial Life (Gubernskie Ocherki) , in which he lashed with indomitable vigour the numerous abuses then current under the name of Government and Justice. Saltykoff’s manner as a satirist somewhat resembles that of Juvenal. His laughter is bitter and strident, his raillery not unfrequently insulting. But, as we have already said, his violence often assumes the form of caricature. Now there are two kinds of caricature: that which exaggerates the truth, as with a magnifying glass, but which never entirely alters its nature, and that which more or less consciously deviates from the natural truth and proportion of fact. Saltykoff indulges in the first kind only, the only admissible one. It is the natural consequence of his character: kind and sensitive at bottom, but superficially rude. At the same time he is very delicate in his perceptions, which have something of instinct and divination about them. He has read much, and above all he has seen much. Je ne cesse de le prier de veiller sur votre vie - ce n'est pas en paroles que je le fais - je sens a chaque instant toute mon ame se soulever vers lui pour vous. J'ai bien besoin d'affection dans cet instant, je suis tellement isole ici. Aussi je ne saurais vous dire combien j'aime ceux que j'aime... et qui ont de l'affection pour moi. Jeudi J'ai ete force d'interrompre cotte lettre il y a trois jours, et je m'empresse de revenir a vous, aussitot que je puis le faire. Des affaires de famille, ou plutot des embarras de famille, en ont ete la cause. Je commence a croire que tout cela tire a sa fin; aussi ne vous en parlerai-je que quand j'aurai un resultat a annoncer bon ou mauvais. L'ancienne ilamme a diablement change et vieilli (elle s'est mariee depuis et est devenue mere de trois enfants). Son mari est monsieur fort maussade et fort tatillon. Je pardonne a mon ancienne flamme son mari, ses enfants et meme la teinte couperosee de son visage. Mais ce que je ne lui pardonne pas, c'est d'etre devenue insignifiante, endormie et plate; c'est surtout de s'etre accroche une fausse queue eu cheveux noirs, tandis que les siens sont bruns, presque blonds, et de l'avoir fait si negligemment qu'on voyait le noeud qui etait gros comme le poing, et dont les deux bouts l'un noir et l'autre blond, retombaient avec grace a droite et a gauche. Часть текста: a Russian, in connection with this issue of Mr. Ralston’s excellent translation of Krilof’s fables, as they prove that English readers are beginning to feel an interest in the literature of his country, and in the national life and character which they have hitherto only contemplated from a political point о view. And Krilof certainly deserves all the attention thus bestowed upon him. He is the only original fabulist who has appeared since La Fontaine; and though he does not, perhaps, equal the exquisite grace of the inimitable Frenchman, though he has fewer sly strokes of wit, less cunning simplicity in telling a story, he has, on the other hand, more originality of invention. His observant good sense penetrates to the roots of things, and he possesses a genuine kind of phlegmatic humour which betrays the Oriental element in Slavonic nature.
