Часть текста: diary. Samedi 6 juin. Parti à 3 heures, j'arrive à 6 à Embley-Park 3 , rêsidence de la famille Nightingale. Le parc est magnifique, des arbres prodigieux, etc. Je trouve une grande sociêtê rêunie au château (à l'exception de Miss Florence Nightingale) 4 , qui est à Londres). Un dîner ennuyeux, puis vers le soir on s'anime. Une dame chante d'une fort vilaine petite voix des vilaines machines anglaises; les messieurs rêpètent le refrain avec des voix de perroquet. Du reste, tous sont très aimables, en vêritê, on me prodigue les invitations, et je remercie tout le monde du mieux que je puis, en faisant des fautes de grammaire à chaque pas. Mr Nightingale est un country gentleman dans toute la force du terme. Sa femme - une bonne petite Vieille; Miss Nightingale, l'aînêe (40 ans passês) a l'air intelligent, bon, actif et nerveux. Les visiteurs sont: 1) Sir Charles Trevilyan, haut employê au Treasury, agrêable, instruit, un peu lourd, mais en somme fort sympathique; il a conservê quelque chose de naïf; 2) sa femme t sœur du cêlèbre Macaulay, a witty woman, rieuse et bavarde; 3) sa fille - insignifiante; 4) Mr Denman, capitaine du yacht de la Reine t figure fière et courageuse, peut-être un peu impertinent; 5) sa...

Quant au vieux bonhomme (pas bonhomme du tout par parenthèse), je l'ai vu avant-hier matin à Paris et il s'est plaint un peu de son fils, des voyages inutiles qu'il aurait faits (l'un de ces voyages a été la cause de la fausse couche) etc. Cependant, comme les jeunes gens paraissent s'aimer véritablement, il n'y a rien à dire, ils seront plus prudents à l'avenir, je l'espère. Je suis très content de voir que tout va au mieux - mais je ne crois pas qu'il y ait beaucoup d'intérieurs où toutes les "idéalités" soient si radicalement absentes: je suis sûr qu'on n'y lit jamais quoi que ce soit. Ce n'est pas une calamité - si l'on veut - mais je m'étonne un peu que ma fille soit ainsi - el e crèverais d'ennui au milieu de cette vie bruyante et jeune - mais exclusivement matérielle, si je devais y rester longtemps 4 . A propos de cela, je ne puis partir qu'après-demain "eadi dans la matinée (j'avais compté pouvoir le faire demain soir) - Mr le marquis de Nadaillac (propriétaire de la verrerie) dîne aujourd'hui chez nous et demain nous dînons chez Mr le marquis de Nadaillac. Существенным недостатком книги было то, что хотя, по словам редакторов, "письма печатались прямо с оригиналов", многие тексты их "были сокращены или доставившими их лицами, или редакциею, в тех местах, которые имеют совершенно интимный характер, или вообще не могли быть признаны пока удобными для печати по близости времени". Следует, впрочем, отметить, что хотя письма Тургенева напечатаны были в "Первом собрании писем" совершенно неудовлетворительно с точки зрения требований, предъявляемых ныне к публикациям такого рода, многие тексты, вошедшие в это издание, сохранили свое значение до наших дней; они не переиздавались, а так как некоторые из оригиналов теперь утрачены, то эти письма доныне цитируются и воспроизводятся именно по "Первому собранию", являющемуся, таким образом, первоисточником для публикации утраченных писем {Рукопись "Первого собрания писем" Тургенева, составленная и отредактированная В. П. Гаевским и М. М. Стасюлевичем и служившая для набора, хранится в Рукописном отделе Института русской литературы (ф. 293, оп. 1, ед. хр. No 1767--1761). Saltykoff’s manner as a satirist somewhat resembles that of Juvenal. His laughter is bitter and strident, his raillery not unfrequently insulting. But, as we have already said, his violence often assumes the form of caricature. Now there are two kinds of caricature: that which exaggerates the truth, as with a magnifying glass, but which never entirely alters its nature, and that which more or less consciously deviates from the natural truth and proportion of fact. Saltykoff indulges in the first kind only, the only admissible one. It is the natural consequence of his character: kind and sensitive at bottom, but superficially rude. At the same time he is very delicate in his perceptions, which have something of instinct and divination about them. He has read much, and above all he has seen much. In fact he knows his own country better than any man living. The History of a Town — which is in reality a sort of satirical history of Russian society during the second half of the past and the beginning of the present century, under the form of a burlesque description of the town of Glupoff, and of the governors who successively ruled over it from 1762 to 1826 — could not well be translated in its entirety, nor do I think that it could be understood or appreciated by a Western public. The «taste of the soil» is too perceptible, and the language too often runs into slang. Frequently too the author allows his fancy to run away with him in a manner quite preposterous. In the series of typical Governors of Glupoff (Dullborough), for instance, there is one who has for his head a pâté de foie gras, which is eventually devoured by the «Marshal of the Nobility», a great gourmand and lover of truffles. Such absurdities as these, very possibly, have been introduced on purpose, in order to discomfit...
